Microsoft SQL Server is one of the leading relational database technologies on the market.

The original SQL Server code dates back to the 1980s, and the software was initially geared toward workgroup and departmental applications. But newer versions transformed the platform into an enterprise-level database management system (DBMS).

From 1995 to 2017, 11 versions were released, culminating with the shipment of SQL Server 2017. With all the updates came a variety of data management and analytics tools that Microsoft now bundles with SQL Server. Those tools, along with the technology's architectural building blocks, comprise the key components of SQL Server that every database administrator and developer should know about in order to reap all the benefits the DBMS has to offer.
