Improving the search performance though text fields

I want to store articles in SQL to search them, but the length of the field varchar is 8000, which is not sufficent. So, I would use the text field, but I read that the search process will be very slow. What can I use instead of the text field for large text?

You could split your data into chunks or 8k and store these chunks in a row of it's one (concatenating on retrieval), however this is not usually recommended. Searching TEXT data types should perform reasonably well if you use FULLTEXT indexing rather than the usual "LIKE" query predicate. See SQL Server Books online.
