Defragmenting hard drive where SQL Server resides

Is it safe to defragment hard drives where SQL Server databases reside? Are there preparation steps that need to be taken? The current setup is NT Server version 4 SP4 with SQL Server 7.

You can. On a dedicated database server, I've found it to be mostly a waste of time to do so. As with all major maintenance tasks, if you are going to do it, it should be done during off hours in a maintenance window where you can take the system offline.
