Mainstream support for at least two versions of Microsoft SQL Server is set to expire next year.
Microsoft will end support for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 on January 12, with SQL Server 2008 RTM following on April 13. Self-Help online support for both products will continue to be available for at least 12 months after each expiration date.
"Customers are encouraged to prepare and execute on their upgrade and/or sustained engineering plans as early as possible for these SQL versions," said Microsoft program manager Christina Gendrano in a recent blog post. She said Premier Support customers who are unable to meet these deadlines can purchase extended support with Microsoft.
The deadlines are in accordance with Microsoft's Support Lifecycle policy, which states that mainstream support for most software products will expire five years after their initial release, or 12 months following the most current service pack.
Mainstream support will continue for SQL Server 2005 SP3 and SQL Server 2008 SP1, which includes no-cost incident support, security updates and the ability to request non-security hotfixes.
