Microsoft unveiled the latest Community Technical Preview (CTP) of SQL Server 2005 on Tuesday, the final update before the product's November 7 release.

According to Tom Rizzo, director of product management for SQL Server at Microsoft, there haven't been many changes since the last CTP, which was released in June.

We want to make sure this thing is rock solid the day it goes out. We don't want customers to say, 'I'll wait until the first service pack' on it.

"There are some changes in the UI [user interface] and management tools," he said, "but not in the underlying application." Even the UI changes are mainly "little tweaks," he said. "It won't look that different to you unless you look with a keen eye."

The update is available in nine languages, unlike earlier CTPs that were published only in English and Japanese. "This is our last CTP before the release, so we wanted to make sure all our customers, worldwide, could test it out," Rizzo said. "We want to make sure this thing is rock solid the day it goes out. We don't want customers to say, 'I'll wait until the first service pack' on it."

More than 300,000 copies of the June CTP were distributed by download or CD; Rizzo expects about 500,000 requests for the September version.
