Microsoft continued reaching out to the Java community Friday with the public beta of a new version of its driver that lets Java and J2EE applications on any platform interoperate with SQL Server.

The SQL Server 2005 Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) Driver will work with SQL Server 2000 and 2005, according to Microsoft. JDBC is an API that allows for cross-database connectivity to a range of SQL databases, among other things. The current beta supports Windows-based authentication as opposed to the old driver, which only supported SQL Server-based authentication.

The driver is available as a redistributable download for both platforms at no additional charge. The driver is seen by some experts not so much as technologically important, but as an acknowledgement by Microsoft that many organizations have heterogeneous computing environments.
