QUESTION POSED ON: 05 April 2005
In the last point of your tip SQL Server performance-tuning worst practices, you specified DBCC SHOWCONTIG. I would like to know more about this and if the result shows a lot of fragments, what is the next step to should take?

>
If you are experiencing fragmentation based on the results from DBCC SHOWCONTIG, it is necessary to rebuild your indexes and determine if changes need to be made with respect to the clustered and non-clustered indexes as well as the fill factor for the clustered index. Since indexes are a core component to SQL Server performance, be on the lookout for an upcoming tip or two focusing on indexing.
