SVVP (server virtualization validation program)

Contributor(s): Mark Fontecchio

SVVP (server virtualization validation program) is a policy that allows administrators running running Windows Server on certified virtualization technologies other than Hyper-V and Microsoft Virtual Server to receive technical support for Windows Server from Microsoft.

Microsoft mandates that those virtualization technologies be tested on server hardware certified to run Windows Server before they can be accepted into the SVVP. Vendors participating in the program include VMware, Cisco and Oracle.

Once a vendor qualifies its product under the SVVP, customers can initiate support issues with the virtualization vendor or with Microsoft. In some cases, Microsoft and the virtualization vendor will work together to determine whether the root cause of the problem is Windows Server or the underlying virtualization technology.
